Training for Texas Family Medicine Physicians

The McAllen Family Medicine Residency Program was established in 1977 to help train and educate family medicine physicians in South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley under the sponsorship of the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. Since the development of the Family Medicine Residency Program, over 200 physicians have been trained.

The program's mission is to teach residents to provide evidence-based primary care to south Texas patients of all ages—emphasizing care for pregnant women, children, and older adults—through an appropriate blend of supervised patient care experiences, clinical teaching and didactic activities. It is South Texas Health System McAllen's only residency program and its residents work directly with attending physicians in all specialties, including emergency medicine, critical care, radiology and surgery. Residents staff a very active inpatient family medicine service, enabling them to develop the skills and confidence to care for acutely ill patients of all ages. Several faculty physicians are experts in surgical obstetrics, affording residents abundant opportunities to learn advanced obstetrical care and surgical technique.

In April 2015, the McAllen Family Medicine Residency Program became part of a new sponsoring institution, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). The program’s mission has not changed and we look forward to training excellent family medicine physicians who will remain in Texas to practice medicine, particularly in rural underserved areas of the state.
